The ProtoAir wireless gateway is an external, high-performance, low-cost building automation and industrial control IIoT gateway for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that provides manufacturers connectivity into the cloud and instant multi-protocol deployment of field protocols, enabling new or legacy devices to easily interface with other protocols.

With the ability to connect devices to the cloud over wireless and cellular connections and automatically support multiple known controller profiles, the ProtoAir is the instant answer to the OEM's customer's needs and IIoT requirements.

Multi-Protocol Translation

The ProtoAir wireless gateway provides OEMs with the ability to perform standard protocol translation between devices over a wireless network when wired networks are not available or difficult to access using Wi-Fi and cellular. This will enable access between devices or networks of devices to management systems or to the cloud for remote device management, control, and diagnostics.

As a member of the well-regarded FieldServer IIoT gateway and router family, the ProtoAir offers all the benefits of the FieldServer family, such as flexibility with the world’s largest library of 140+ protocols as well as low installation and operating costs. The ProtoAir has the ability to connect to any one or more of the FieldServer standard drivers via the serial or Ethernet port, enabling connectivity to different devices and or networks wirelessly.

1. Multi-protocol translation

OpenVPN allows users to remotely connect local software to their remote site ethernet devices via FieldServer for software updates and changes

7. Proxy Tunnel

An SMC Cloud feature that allows users to view the web page on their remote device via the remote FieldServer

8. ProAttach

This FieldServer feature assists users enter valuable site information to enable rich analytics when analyzing or diagnosing data from all sites via the SMC Cloud

9. Virtual Data Points

A rich Edge Gateway feature that enables manipulation of device data on the FieldServer to produce useful data using a JSON logic engine embedded in the FieldServer Gateway

Please contact the OEM vendor of your ProtoAir to ask for the Start-up guide for the specific ProtoAir. The output protocol can be configured a number of different ways on the ProtoAir and the OEM Vendor will have the correct documentation on how to set it.

The ProtoAir mapping has been pre-configured and approved by the OEM Vendor. MSA Technical Support is not authorized to change it. Please contact your OEM Vendor to inquire about any modifications to the mapping.

Please contact the OEM vendor of your ProtoAir to ask for the Start-up guide for the specific ProtoAir. There are several ways of changing the Device Instance on a ProtoAir Gateway and the OEM Vendor will have the correct process documented in their Start-Up guides.

Recovery Mode occurs when an internal Module of the ProtoNode firmware has suffered a crash or corruption. A firmware upgrade will be required to resolve.

i. Take a Diagnostic Capture and Contact Technical Support

  1. Download and install the FieldServer Toolbox.
  2. Connect to the ProtoAir’s Ethernet port.
  3. Hit the Diagnostic button on the FieldServer Toolbox.
  4. Take a 5-minute, Full Diagnostic of the ProtoAir.
  5. Email the zip file to smc-support@msasafety.com. Be sure to include your observations and what you would like Technical Support to check.
