Landfills are the oldest and still most common form of waste disposal and treatment in many places around the world. These sites produce large amounts of combustible and toxic gases from that seep up from the ground to lower pressure areas, such as ground surface and off-site areas.

While wind dilutes the gas with fresh air, it can still pose a significant hazard to neighboring communities. Many landfill sites are also subsequently reclaimed as sites for new residential, commercial, or industrial facilities. In these cases, toxic and combustible gases can build up in the vicinity or within the complexes themselves, potentially compromising the health and safety of the occupant.

It is essential that all buildings in the vicinity of an active or repurposed landfill implement industrial-grade gas detectors across various areas for comprehensive and continuous monitoring to ensure the health and safety of its occupants. Automation and Integration Strategies

Combustible gases pose a significant hazard to buildings built on a landfill site, particularly in enclosed areas such as basements and crawlspaces that may contain heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) or electrical equipment. For large facilities, gas detection systems should integrate with it building automation system (BAS) and fit within its management and workflow framework.

Smaller buildings without a centralized BAS should program their gas detection system's controller to trigger various alarms, turn off any ignition source near the location of the discharge of gas, and remotely notify a central monitoring center or the appropriate health and safety responders.
