The EZ Gateway M-Bus to Modbus and BACnet is an easy to use, high-performance building and industrial automation protocol gateway for integrators to interface M-Bus products to Modbus and BACnet management systems in commercial buildings, campuses and industrial facilities over Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, BACnet MS/TP or BACnet/IP protocols. M-Bus products encompass a wide range of applications such as energy, gas, heating, water, VFD drives and PLCs. M-BUS to Modbus and BACnet protocol translations include:

Mbus Gateway

With the EZ Gateway M-Bus to Modbus & BACnet, the integrator or contractor does not need to be a protocol expert, and can minimize configuration and commissioning time, while also reducing ongoing operating and maintenance costs.

The EZ Gateway M-Bus to Modbus & BACnet combines field-hardened M-Bus, Modbus and BACnet protocol drivers with an easy to use configuration interface that, once configured, allows M-Bus devices to be presented as virtual BACnet devices which simplifies commissioning, configuration and troubleshooting. The intuitive web-based interface allows configurations to be built in the field or in the office. Additionally, the configuration profiles can be downloaded and then uploaded to other FieldServer M-Bus applications, simplifying the commissioning and integration process on repeatable applications.

1. M-Bus Interoperability
  • M-Bus Explorer discovers all M-Bus devices in the network, shows the manufacturer details as well as available points, and offers one-click profile generation
  • Profile Loader enables efficient profile editing, exporting and importing
  • Up to 64 slave devices (max device count based on model)

  • Virtual nodes allow each M-Bus device connected to a single EZ Gateway to be seen as a separate device on the BACnet network
2. BACnet COV

Use the Change of Value (CoV) setting to reduce the amount of BACnet data overhead to allow network traffic to be less congested by transmitting data only when detecting an M-Bus device status change

All FieldServer gateways come with Remote Access support.  Once registerd to the SMC Cloud, use the Remote Access capability to attach to the FieldServer gateway to monitor, maintain and troubleshoot installed equipment

EZ Gateway Introduction

Introducing our EZ Gateway Modbus to BACnet: the quick and easy Modbus to BACnet integration solution. The EZ Gateway makes configuration and device management an easy-to-use protocol gateway, and always ensuring quality and high-performance.

There are some aspects that can be backed-up and some that cannot. Mapping profiles can be exported to another EZ Gateway. The Device Proxy screen where the profiles are enabled cannot be backed up. Please contact MSA Technical Support at smc-support@msasafety.com and our Support Engineers can assist with setting up your new EZ Gateway.

  • a. Check that the Network Number on the Gateway is unique.
  • b. Verify the BAUD Rate on the Gateway 
  • c. If using a ProtoNode Gateway, switch to the “Single-Node’ Profile BACnet/IP

Yes, this can be changed in the config.csv file. Please reference Section 5.1 in the BACnet IP driver manual to see how to set this parameter.

The field device that is configured on the Client-Side of your Gateway is probably not communicating. Please check the Connection Overview

a. Check the Graphical User Interface

  • i. Download and install the FieldServer Toolbox.
  • ii. Connect to the Gateway’s Ethernet port
  • iii. Use the toolbox to connect to the Gateway
  • iv. On the Navigation Tree, navigate to View->Connections
  • v. Check the Tx Msg and Rx Msg columns for the Protocol. If both columns are incrementing, then the Gateway is communicating to the field device.

b. Take a Diagnostic Capture and Contact Technical Support

  • i. Download and install the FieldServer Toolbox.
  • ii. Connect to the Gateway’s Ethernet port
  • iii. Hit the Diagnostic button on the FieldServer Toolbox
  • iv. Take a 5-minute, Full Diagnostic of the Gateway
  • v. Email the zip file to smc-support@msasafety.com. Be sure to include your observations and what you would like Technical Support to check.
