The FieldPoP device cloud and the FieldServer product in the field connect with each other over a secure but firewall-independent pub-sub message passing and browsing infrastructure. Applications that run in the cloud, whether they are native FieldPoP applications or whether they are other business or custom applications, seamlessly interact with the data and the local applications that run in the field.

Step 1: Bundle an IIoT Gateway with your Device and Add Local Applications to the Gateway

With the unmatched multi-protocol versatility of FieldServer IIoT gateways, routers, and explorers, connecting devices using one protocol to other devices using another protocol is made simple. We support over 140 open and proprietary protocols and provide custom implementation options.

In addition to connecting protocol X to protocol Y, FieldServer products have local standard and custom applications that can provide device status, historian, alarming, and diagnostic tools. FieldServer products can extract a device’s data points that are normally hidden and make it visible on the local applications.

Step 2: Connect Your Devices to the Local Management System through the IIoT Gateway

It is important to connect the FieldServer IIoT gateway, router, or explorer to the building management system (BMS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, or programmable logic controller (PLC) sitting on the IP network. This allows for the devices to connect to the internet, and subsequently, the cloud.

If a facility does not provide a wired connection option, there are other ways to connect to the network, such as wireless, cellular, and Bluetooth technology.

Step 3: Connect Your Devices to a Device Cloud through the IIoT Gateway

Once the device is connected to the IP network through the FieldServer, the user has the option to register the FieldServer to the FieldPoP device cloud through the FieldServer’s local applications. Similarly, facility managers that oversee the Sentry IT Controller’s Sentry InSite application can register the controller to FieldPoP from the embedded FieldServer’s application.

After the registration process is complete, the user will see their registered FieldServer or Sentry IT Controller appear on the FieldPoP geospatial map. The FieldPoP device cloud is a cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) that enables:

  • Visibility and management of all your registered field devices from one portal
  • Data point retrieval from the field to the cloud for storage and analysis
  • Secure remote access to local applications running on registered FieldServer IIoT Gateways
  • Real-time alerts and notifications to right personnel (associating devices with people)
  • Integration with business and analytics applications (e.g. middleware)

Step 4: Connect the Device Cloud to Other Clouds and Business Applications

As many companies use cloud-based solutions for customer relationship management, supply chain management, product development, business analytics, etc., it is important to have a tool that imports the important data into these cloud platforms.

Let FieldPoP do the “dirty” work of field device management and security. As the “blue collar cloud”, the FieldPoP device cloud serves as a device data middleware layer that lets third-party cloud platforms, or “white collar clouds”, use field product data in business and analytics applications. The FieldPoP is architected to plug into and synchronize with popular cloud platforms like Salesforce.com and SAP/Hana; and also with cost-effective storage targets like Dropbox. As a result, OEMs and their customers can gain new insights that lead to improvements in product quality, innovations in products and services, and identification of new revenue opportunities – ultimately enriching routine business processes.

Using the FieldPoP REST API, OEMs and their customers can set up FieldServer IIoT gateways, routers, and explorers through the local applications and FieldPoP to collect and stream the right data points at the right frequency from the field to third party cloud platforms, future-proofing their enterprise information architecture.
